¿What is GazeLab?

Videoculograph (VOG) with laser projection system, integral with the patient's head. GazeLab allows you to measure accurately complex biomechanical diseases.

Measures ocular deviation at any point in space.
Measure strabismus.
Measure nystagmus.
Measure pupillary dynamics.
Measure the field of ocular motility.

This medical device is equipped with two cameras with infrared vision, that allows recording eye movements with great precision. The laser projector leads the patient gaze projecting at any point in space.

While the projection system leads the gaze, the cameras film both eyes and the computer analyzes the images (scanning the pupil and the iris) to measure:

  • What is the behavior of the pupils,
  • How are oscillating the eyes,
  • And If the eye rotates and how much.

Eyes in motion

Most of already existing ophthalmological devices explore parts of the eye (anatomical structures) from a static point of view. For example, through the slit lamp you can observed the anterior segment of the eye; the ophthalmoscope does the same with the fundus of the eye; or the OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) that shows cuts of the retina and choroid. For all of them the patient must be still. In any case, it is impossible to measure the movements with actual devices (we can observe pupillary reflexes but not measured them).

By contrast, GazeLab is a device that is intended to fill this need, to study the eye in its natural condition, in motion, so we can measure pathologies related with ocular biomechanic dysfunctions.

Currently, the only device we can find in ophthalmologists’ practice that tries to fill the need of measure a change in eye position is Synoptophore. It is used in most of the cases by strabismus specialist. This device is by definition an optical device, 100% manual and quite complex to handle. The Synoptophore does not provide adequate precision, nether allows measurement of complex diseases, nor has the possibility of exploration reporting. Additionally, the result of the exploration is subjective, depends on who performs the examination and patient cooperation. Thus has come into disuse as a measuring instrument.

The Helmet Concept

Valid reference system: the chin support is replaced by a "helmet" that is fastened to the patient's head. This helmet has an integrated projection system which projects through the exploration pattern. If the patient moves his head, both the projection and the measurement systems (cameras), move along with it, always keeping the point of reference (the point of reference is in the head, not on the floor). This prevents the head movements influence the measurement. For this kind of measurements, the chin support ends up being a hindrance and leads to errors, because head always moves when in the chin support!
